About NFL MVP

During the regular season, the American football player deemed the most valuable in the National Football League (NFL) receives the NFL Most Valuable Player Award (NFL MVP). Several organizations present it.

The Pro Football Writers of America (PFWA) and the Associated Press (A.P.) are two organizations that present the NFL MVP award. The NFL has staged the annual NFL Honours ceremony to honor the Associated Press MVP award winner every year since the 2011 campaign.

Joe F. Carr Trophy, granted by the NFL from 1938 through 1946, was the first honor referred to as a Most Valuable Player award.

Sporting News and United Press International (UPI) are a couple more organizations that have previously distributed an MVP. The Jim Thorpe Trophy was presented by the Newspaper Enterprise Association (NEA).

History

The first NFL season with the Most Valuable Player award was to the Flying Dutchman of the Detroit Lions in 1937. Since the Gruen Watch Company sponsored the MVP award at the time, it was known as the Gruen Trophy.

Just one year later, the prize would be renamed the Joe F. Carr Trophy and given every year after that until 1946. Despite the 1937 Gruen Trophy winner, the 1938 MVP Joe F. Carr Trophy, which went to Mel Hein of the New York Giants, is generally recognized as the first formal MVP award of the NFL.

Several organizations have awarded the title of NFL MVP over the years. The Associated Press MVP award, which has been given out since 1957, is regarded as the official and most coveted MVP honor.

A day or two before the Super Bowl, the NFL now holds an annual Honours Ceremony to reveal the league's MVP. In addition to selecting the MVP, The Associated Press also selects offensive and defensive Player of the Year.

Who wins the MVP?

The 50 sportswriters on the MVP voting panel mainly chose offensive players to receive the honor. There is no doubt that offense is where the action and excitement are, and as a result, only three defensive players have won the Associated Press MVP award in the award's history.

Given that 38 quarterbacks have taken home the MVP, betting on one of them makes sense. If history is any indication, picking a quarterback gives you a better than 60% chance of winning the MVP award. Running backs have won the second most MVP awards.
